As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 431 people, 193 households, and 109 families residing in the city. The population density was 109.8 people per square mile (42.5/km²). There were 215 housing units at an average density of 54.8/sq mi (21.2/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 99.30% White, 0.23% Native American, 0.23% Asian, 0.23% from other races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.70% of the population. There were 193 households out of which 28.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.2% were married couples living together, 7.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 43.5% were non-families. 38.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 21.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.23 and the average family size was 2.98. In the city the population was spread out with 27.1% under the age of 18, 4.4% from 18 to 24, 25.3% from 25 to 44, 21.3% from 45 to 64, and 21.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 91.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 85.8 males. The median income for a household in the city was $29,545, and the median income for a family was $45,208. Males had a median income of $27,308 versus $19,375 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,655. About 9.3% of families and 12.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.7% of those under age 18 and 6.9% of those age 65 or over.
